Backlist Review: Illuminae (The Illuminae Files #1) by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

I feel like with every reread, this book further imprints itself on my soul. Like wow, how I am supposed to function after everything that happened!?

So the premise of this story is that an illegal mining settlement is attacked by another corporation: BeiTech. Our heroes just broke up with each other and are now fleeing for their lives. However, once the refugees flee to space in three separate ships: Hypatia, Copernicus and the Alexander, danger is still stalking them in the form of the BeiTech dreadnought Lincoln. Unfortunately in the attack the Analytics and Defense something Network, known as AIDAN was damaged which leads to some unforeseeable problems and unique situations.

Enter Kady Grant, the short, spunky, pink haired girl who quickly becomes a computer hacker under the tutelage of fellow space refugee Byron Zhang on the Hypatia. I loved their interactions, they always made me laugh. I also love hacking, I wish I could do it so I definitely lived vicariously through Kady. Ezra Mason is stuck on the Lincoln and still a bit bitter about the breakup with Kady. Luckily or un-luckily, he is conscripted and spends most of his time training to be a cyclone pilot. The two end up teaming together when things go wrong aboard the Alexander.

This was such an awesome space drama and I don’t think I’ll ever get sick of the story. I honestly love everything about this between the unique format of the book, AIDAN in general, the amazing full cast audiobook and the rest of the characters. The adrenaline was constantly pumping through my system during my reread. I can’t wait for Gemina since it is my FAVORITE!
